Christmas is just a few short days away! Santa is
There’s a lot of advice floating around for how to live longer, and most of it is just basic common sense: get rest, eat well, don’t smoke, etc., etc. Here’s some less traditional advice (and some quotes) from some of the oldest living people on the planet on the weird things they credit for their superhuman lifespans.
Age: 115 – oldest living person in Europe, fifth oldest in the world
Her secret: Morano has consumed three raw eggs a day since her teens, when her doctor recommended them for anemia. If you’re curious, that comes out to somewhere in the ballpark of 100,000 raw eggs that she’s eaten. Her other secret involves staying away from the opposite sex. Her marriage ended in 1938 and while she had her choice of any number of men after that, she never settled down again, saying she “didn’t want to be dominated by anyone.”
Age: 117 next month
Her secret: “Eat and sleep and you will live a long time. You have to learn to relax.” Seems easy enough, right? She also eats sushi at least once a month, if you needed an excuse for that.
Born Nov. 5, 1912, Brooklyn
Her secret: Drinking and dancing. Lewis says she keeps busy with all sorts of activities, including “the senior community’s weekly dance party, where we do fun dances, like the Macarena. I don’t miss happy hour, either! I drop in three times a week.”
Her secret: Talk to people. Stay active. Be curious about life. “Do something interesting every day; otherwise you disintegrate.”
Age: 112 – The world’s oldest living man.
His secret: Basically the opposite of Mae Lewis, he swears off booze. “I do not know the secret of my long life. I used to always exercise, eat in moderation and never consumed alcohol.”
Just turned 100.
Her secret: Milly says bingo keeps her young. That and jigsaw puzzles.
Born June, 1912
Her secret: “Keep kosher.”
Age: 109 – oldest woman living in Scotland
Her secret: Porridge and abstinence. “My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They’re just more trouble than they’re worth. I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married.”
