This Wednesday, the FDA approved a non-surgical treatment for double chins. Yep. You can now melt away you face fat with a simple injection. The treatment is called Kybella and it reduces moderate to severe fat deposits under the chin with its active ingredient, deoxycholic acid.
Editor in chief of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Rohrich suggests that “So many consumers don’t want a knife; they want a needle,” Well, yeah!
Up to 50 tiny needles containing deoxycholic acid are inserted into the fat deposits under the jawline in two 20-minute session. The shot obliterates fat cells, making them rupture and basically melt away. With an insane acid vs. fat battle going on just under your nose, the most common side effects have been minimal including bruising, pain and swelling at the injection site that clears up in a day or two. Oh, and in some studies, facial nerves were accidentally injured in 4.3% of patients, leaving them with asymmetrical smiles for 42 days on average. Roughly 2% suffered swallowing problems for a few days. But, who’s counting?
Yes. But when can I get it?
The injections will be commercially available in late summer, after doctors are trained to give them.
What about the cost?!
The price for Kybella is not yet set and it’s said that insurance will not cover the treatment.
But, no everyone is a good candidate for Kybella. Dr. Rohrich said, “you’ll have a crepey neck and need a neck lift” if a patient has excess fat and loose skin in that area. Not to mention neck lifts can cost $5,000 or more – so choose wisely.
