Famous Musical to Movie Adaptations

The Sound of Music

Let alone one of the most successful of all time, this musical adaptation surpasses all others.

My Fair Lady

At one point, My Fair Lady was the longest-running Broadway musical, so it only makes sense that is also one of the most well-known movie adaptations.

West Side Story

This story tells a tale that is like Romeo and Juliet set to music. No wonder it was an Oscar award winner.

Chicago

Aside from all the big names in this movie, the musical is equally successful still making a run on Broadway today.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

What do you get when you combine Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter? Genius, that’s what. Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller comes to life in this spooky film adaptation.

Hairspray

With a star-studded cast, this stage musical shines bright. And who doesn’t love Zac Efron as Link Larkin and John Travolta as Mrs. Turnblad?

Dream Girls

Proving that anything Beyonce touches turns to gold, this adaptation was completely stellar. This film also earned Jennifer Hudson her first Academy Award for Best-Supporting Actress.

Les Misérables

This musical adaption was all the hype in 2012 and even paved the road for other adaptations such as Into the Woods. The movie’s success even brought on a Broadway revival for the show this past year.

Grease

While it isn’t the most successful musical to movie adaptation of all time, it is definitely a classic. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are the perfect on screen pair.  Rock stars.

Rent

This adaptation features many of the original cast members including big name Idina Menzel.

Mamma Mia!

Before she was the witch in Into the Woods this year, Meryl Streep was the carefree mother in this musical adaptation alongside other musical adaption actors such as Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables) and Christine Baranski (Into the Woods).

The Phantom of the Opera

As one of the most popular stage musicals in the history of Broadway fans were ecstatic to see this musical make its way to the big screen

Into the Woods

It was 27 years in the making, but it finally happened. This year, Disney released the theatrical version of the well known Broadway musical Into the Woods and it must be doing pretty well, it’s already nominated for three Golden Globes.

Wicked

Just this week, Producer Marc Platt of Into the Woods announced that a Wicked film is highly possible in 2016. Nothing is set in stone yet, but just the news that it is in the works is good enough for fans everywhere.
