Gone With the Wind is one of the most iconic
I hate to break it to you but Steven Colbert is right – your fluffy Teddy has a dark side. Toy Story 3’s Lots-O’-Huggin also has lots to say and its pretty strong stuff: “Ain’t one kid that ever loved a toy really. Chew on that when you’re at the dump!”Hardly the caring sharing type. But some bears are downright terrifying. As they turn the teddy myth on its head and scare us witless, beware these bears!
#1 Evil Care Bears
In the 1980’s kids tuned into Care Bears II – New Generation with hopes of seeing their beloved bears give love to the world. Instead they got the fright of their lives watching ghostly shadow bears with red glowing eyes. These are scenes any child unfortunate enough to have watched it is unlikely to forget. Care Bear nemesis Dark Heart had possessed a scary boy who was trying to trap the Care Bears in a magic sack. His transformation into an evil red-eyed fog was so terrifying that some kids were probably unable to look at a Care Bear again.
#2 Baron The Possessed Teddy Bear
In 2006 Ebay offered this possessed teddy bear named Baron for sale. His tale of woe came from a man who claimed he had owned it as a child but due to ‘incidents he could not remember’ his parents had removed the bear and put him in therapy. He met Baron again by chance in a thrift store and took him home. Cue poltergeist activity, a dead cat, shuffling in the night and red glowing eyes. His buyer-beware caveat chilled the bones: “Baron’s eyes are firmly attached and for reasons I am not willing to discuss should not be removed under any circumstances”. True story or advertising ploy? Either way, the lure of the possessed bear worked and it sold for $300.
#3 Cape Fear Bear Trap
This bear makes a horror-inspiring appearance. A murderer played by Robert De Niro is on the loose. The family are trying to keep him out of their house and rig up a trip wire. As the tension mounts the camera pans across their living room, where the trip wire runs past a teddy sat in a chair. Suddenly, something makes the teddy twitch, with only one sinister possibility – the killer is back:
#4 Fox And The Hound Bear
This unnamed snarling grizzly with red eyes and silver fur has terrified generations of children. The heroes are tracking and get caught by the bear. The hound Copper tries to protect his master, but is soon overwhelmed. The tension is horrible, the bear is beastly. Just as the huge beast gets ready to kill Copper, his friend Tod he fox arrives and he and the bear topple over a waterfall. The horror!
#5 Golden Compass Bear Duel
The Panserbjørne armed bears take up the fight in a duel for power. Armor is important but they also use their jaws and razor sharp claws in close combat. In the Northern Lights mythology, such duels do not normally require a fight to the death, but this one, between Iorek Byrnison and Iofur Raknison does.
#6 Mor’du in Brave
This gigantic 11-foot-tall bear with huge claws, long, sharp teeth devours people. He transformed into a bear after first murdering his family. This bear is no doubt one the scariest bears to ever stomp his way across the screen.
Finally, Steven Colbert’s Bears
The “Threat Down” never fails to try and warn the public of bear-related dangers, so be wise and listen up!
