1. Not only are blue whales the largest animals in existence, scientists also believe that they’re the largest animal ever to exist, bigger than mammoths or dinosaurs. And it turns out that the species as a whole is getting bigger.

2. A toddler could easily fit into the blowhole of a blue whale.

3. There is not a single ocean in the world that doesn’t house a blue whale.

4. Most people think elephants are pretty big, but they don’t match up with the blue whale. An elephant is only the size of the whale’s tongue.

5. Not only are the whales big, they’re also loud. The loudest on the planet, in fact, reaching 188 decibels.

6. The heart of a blue whale is approximately the size of a Mini Cooper.

7. The beasts can also live for a long time, up to 90 years in the wild.

8. With their size, the whales can be incredibly fast. They swim up to 30 miles per hour.

9. Blue whales dive to catch their food, usually to around 500m.

10. It’s rare for a blue whale to be killed by another animal, although sometimes sharks and killer whales will attack them. More common are impacts with ships.

11. Generally, female blue whales only have a calf once every three years. Gestation lasts about a year, and the baby is born at a whopping 2,700kg and 8m long.
